SCMAP is a distribution management, a major component of logistics and supply chain management, was one field where competitive edges were being sought by manufacturing and trading firms, since the 1980s, as opportunities in production efficiency and product quality had become scarce. SCMAP is the new name of the Distribution Management Association of the Philippines (DMAP), A professional organization formed in 1990 by a group of companies operating in the Philippines with an original mission to achieve effective distribution of products and materials.
Since then the organization has grown in membership, expanded its mission, and allowed membership for individuals with a keen interest and involvement in supply chain management.
Supply Chain Management Association of the Philippines (SCMAP) conduct its General Membership meeting last February 23, 2012 at M.K. Tan Hall, Bayanihan Center, Pasig City Philippines. The said Membership meeting is sponsored by Swiftstar Logistics System Corp.
The general meeting was attended by the member of companies present (Board members and committee chairpersons) namely, AJINOMOTO, BENBY ENTERPRISE, CDO FOODSPHERE, COLGATE-PALMOLIVE, DEL MONTE PHILS., DHL SUPPLY CHAIN PHILS., FAST CARGO LOGISTICS, GLOBE TELECOM, HOLCIM PHILS, INTEGRATED COMMISSARY, IDS PHILS, JG SUMMIT PETROCHEM, JUGRO TRANSPORT, LITEXTPRESS, MEGAVIA CORP., MONHEIM DISTRIBUTORS, NESTLE PHILS. INC., NUTRIASIA, ORIENTAL & MOTOLITE, PASUAL LABORATORIES, PLDT, RFM CORP., ROYAL CARGO COMBINED LOG., SANDOZ PHILS. CORP., SAN MIGUEL FOODS, SAN MIGUEL YAMAMURA, SIEMENS INC. SMART COMMUNICATIONS, SOLID LAGUNA CORP. The general meeting was started at 0800hrs. Ms. Ana Rose Ochoa lead the invocation and acted as EMCEE, and then it was followed by a welcome remarks from the SCMAP President Ike Castillo, the president welcomed the participants and cited the thrusts of SCMAP for the year.
The first presenter is Mr. Al Lagera – AVP Supply Chain Asset Protection and Management Group –PLDT). The speaker focused his presentation of his own journey related to Group Procurement and how it has progressed for PLDT. Followed by Mr. Gabriel Raymond Patag – Operations Development Manager TNT Express Worldwide Phils., the speaker discussed urban transport challenges because cities are growing in size and population with motorization rapidly increasing. This is affecting quality of life because of congestion, pollution, safety and yet policies are not keeping up. In terms of the Philippines’ Logistics Competitiveness considering Customers, infrastructure, international shipment, Logistics Competence, Tracking and Tracing and Timelines, the World Bank ranked the Phils. At 4th spot from among the 7 ASEAN member nations. It continues to hover at this position for the last 5 years and it was noted that efforts focused on creative solutions rather railroad facility, road network port, airport and cargo handling facilities with the increased cost of doing business was also discussed.
The third speaker is Mr. Augusto Arguelles, Professor Operations Management, Ateneo Graduate School of Business, his presentation was “Track Reengineering in the Supply Chain”, and he made use of a case study to be able to present business process reengineering and how it can be used in the supply chain so that participants will be encouraged in continuously improving their supply chain by replicating the re-engineering application.
Then, it was followed by Swiftstar Logistics System Corp (SLSC) presentation themed Total Security program by Mr. Eric de Guzman and Ms. Kristine Santos. The presentation started by Mr. Eric de Guzman, introducing the Swiftstar Group of Companies. Among its affiliate companies are Swiftstar Logistics Corp., GO Logistics, the retail freight forwarding and business center, S.L.Cargo – handles all land arrangements, SDI – provide the infrastructure requirements, Tel & Co Allianz – the trading arm and Swiftstar Logistics System Corp. who provide all the system needs of affiliate companies. He also emphasized that SLSC is a TAPA Asia Member. This is a security association organized in 1997 and pioneered by Intel and other semi-con companies to address the counterfeiting and hi-jacking issues. Over the years, it has evolved to tackle other security concerns by means of setting realistic security guidelines for both facility and logistics application, being a corporate member, SLSC are bound to observe and promote good security practice in all SLSC products and services.
While Ms. Kristine Santos presented the SLSC products; among the products of SLSC are Mtrack (GPS), RFen (RFID), CCTV, Control Monitoring Station (CMS) and Total Security Program (TSP). She presented the security features of mtrack GPS devices as well as reports and other product benefits ranging from personal units to heavy duty vehicle GPS tracker. RFID products can be used for warehouses, retail outlets, production and distribution line, vehicle access and weighing scale. CCTV and Networking products include IP cameras capable for remote monitoring access and mobile viewing using internet access.
The forth presenter is SCMAP VP Gabby Patag, present the 2012 thrusts for SCMAP’s membership with emphasis on growth in membership, making it non-inclusive and creating more value for its members. SCMAP VP Gabby Patag solicited the help of the attendees to sign up the different committees on SCMAP because SCMAP is our organization G. Patag said. The working committees of SCMAP are: Communication, Membership, Land and Air Transport, Shipping and Ports, Inbound Logistics, Academe and Training, Knowledge Center, Events Management and Warehousing.
After the presentation of SCMAP VP Gabby Patag, Ike Castillo, President & COO FAST Logistics / SCMAP President 2012 present Managing Up & Down: How to Manage your Team and Your Boss. Mr. Ike Castillo deviated from the usual technical presentations and spoke about something more personal. He discussed the 3 principles of Managing down and 8 principle of Managing Up. The application of the 70-20-10 rule (Luzien Principle) where one learns 70% through actual on the job experience, 20% through coaching and mentoring and 10% through classroom exercises was explained. He also quoted Peter Drucker on Managing Up “You don’t have to like or admire your boss, nor do you have to hate him. You do have to manage him, however so that he becomes your resource for achievement, accomplishment and personal success.”
Ms. Evangeline Carino-Diche AVP-Integrated Management Systems – FAST Logistics, was the sixth presenter, she discussabout Green Logistics, she were a recipients of a scholarship grant from the Association of Overseas Technical Scholarship (AOTS) held Tokyo Japan last Jan. 11-20, 2012. She presented results of the benchmarking activity during this trip. Furthermore about her presentation is Japan advocacy a 3R (Reduce, Re-use, Recycle) Oriented sustainable Society with various measures in place such as the Law for Promoting Effective Utilization of Resources, Recycling Law, Waste Management and Public Cleaning Law, the Fundamental Plan for Establishing a Sound Material Cycle society. After her presentation it was followed by Engr. Chris Borsi, HS&E Manager, Distribution Division ZuelligPharma Corp.,were the last presenter. Engr. Chris Borsipresents Track the role of logistics in the 20th century, Consideration of Environmental Issues. He started on Green Logistics is a manifestation of corporate social responsibility amidst issues related to economic growth, environmental management and corporate governance. Green logistics may be applied to enhance productivity, thus increasing sales and growth. This may be through development of strategies to improve production efficiency, reduction of waste and standardization. Logistics improvements such as reduction in inventory and integration of inventory related functions can also be pursued.
The closing remarks delivered to the audience by SCMAP secretary Anna Quintos by thanking all the resource speakers, attendees and the company sponsor who helped to make the Supply Chain a day of success.
